Imagine you are a lone woman in a car and violent rioters surround you and start smashing your car. One of the criminal thugs climbs on the hood of your car and begins intentionally smashing your windshield with an object in his hand. As he commits this felony violence, he falls off and is bumped by the car’s fender. This happened to Jennifer Watson, 37, in Denver last May of 2020. The attack was captured on camera.
For this, the Denver District Attorney’s office charged the victim with reckless assault and reckless driving. None of the perpetrators were ever charged with crimes. The local NBC station even publicly accused Watson of assault and portrayed Max Baily, 22, who smashed her windshield, as an innocent victim.
The local District Attorney is progressive prosecutor Beth McCann who explicitly promised to put fewer Black people behind bars during her campaign. The media praised her for being the first female DA, claiming she “broke the glass ceiling in Denver.”
This is a statement from the victim’s lawyer:
“On the evening of May 28, 2020, my client was just trying to get home, driving a route she took regularly, when she was diverted by protesters at the intersection of East Colfax and Broadway. She was alone in her car with her dog when she was surrounded by people who began kicking and hitting her car and taunting and yelling at her. While stopped, Mr. Max Bailey jumped up onto the hood of her car and her windshield was smashed in two places. She was terrified and fearful for her safety,”
The victim of the rioters finally had her day in court. A Denver jury acquitted her of reckless assault, a class 1 misdemeanor, but still convicted her of reckless driving, a class 2 misdemeanor.
