Update: Cherelle McLaughlin was arrested and charged with assault on November 28th

TyQaun General Jr, 14, is currently held in juvenile detention for the fatal stabbing of Delvin Ferrell, 15, inside Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School.

Another person is also hospitalized with severe stabbing injuries. Wake County DA Lorrin Freeman says that General could potentially be charged with first degree murder as an adult.

Cherelle McLaughlin, General’s mother, says that her daughter was followed home by a mob a week before the stabbing. She says the mob attacked her and her daughter in front of their house. McLaughlin alleges that she warned the school that the same group was targeting her son.

Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School was shut down on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, they announced that the students could get a free hot lunch to go. Regular classes resumed on Thursday.

This school originally opened in 1997 with a special emphasis on math, science, technology, and college preparedness. According to Great Schools, the school is 57% Black, 31% Latino, and 7% White. Out of 33 High Schools in the District, it is the Blackest and the second worst performing. The only high school in the district with worse academic performance is SCORE Academy, which was launched in 2017 for students expelled from other schools.

According to WRAL, the school experiences 30.84 criminal acts per 1,000 students, compared to a state average of 8.77. The number of arrests at the school is 1.47 per 1,000, or over 16 times the state average.

TyQaun’s parents say that he was only defending himself. You be the judge!
