Homicides up 21% across 66 US cities and counties

MCCA - Violent Crime Survey

The Major Cities Chiefs Association has published a violent crime survey for the first six months of 2021.

Out of 66 cities and counties:

48 had more homicides than the same time period in 2020
12 had fewer
6 had the same number

Overall, there was a 21% increase in homicides.

The most dramatic increases were:

Portland: +500% (Portland experienced most of its 2020 homicides during the second half of the year)
Austin: +104%
Pittsburgh: +100%
Fresno: +95%
Albuquerque: +87%
Oakland: +82%
Baltimore County, MD: +78%
Newark: +75%
Columbus: +71%
Louisville: +69%
Las Vegas: +63%
Montgomery County, MD: +56%
Atlanta: +52%
Minneapolis: +45%
Buffalo: +45%
Tucson: +44%
Cleveland: +37%
New York City: +37%

Most dramatic decreases:

Arlington, TX: -57%
Tulsa: -29%
Jacksonville: -29%
Aurora: -26%
