Black MVA death rate still remains elevated from BLM riot spike

Blacks used to have a lower MVA death rate than Whites

It is a provable fact that Black motor vehicle death accident [MVA] rates exploded at the same time nationwide George Floyd riots began in 2020. This was because police departments all across the USA conducted a stand-down and stopped pulling over Black violators. Many cities publicly bragged that they were letting higher numbers of Black violators slide.

Keep in mind that until 2015, Whites had a higher MVA death rate than Blacks! On average, Black individuals drive less and are more likely to drive in dense urban areas. Blacks use public transportation more than Whites. From 2015 to 2019, Black MVA rates had been on the rise. Then they exploded widely as Blacks rioted across America. White and Latino rates increased, but not as much as those of Blacks. MVA death rates for Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and Pacific Islanders all peaked in 2021.

The CDC has published final data for 2023. The Black MVA death rate was 32.1% higher than the White rate, and remains higher than pre-riot rates. The legacy of the George Floyd riots, the law enforcement stand down, and efforts to put “fewer Black men behind bars” have led to lasting spikes in Black homicide death rates, Black MVA death rates, and Black accidental drug overdose death rates.
