Portland’s poop crises!

Public defecation leads to Shigella outbreak

The Portland metro area had 218 cases of Shigella in 2023. However, 45 of those cases were all in December.

The outbreak first started in July of 2015 among homosexual men. By 2016, it spread from homosexual men to the general homeless population due to public defecation and unsanitary conditions.

The virus has primarily affected homeless people and homosexual men. It is particularly concentrated in Old Town, where large numbers of homeless drug addicts defecate in public area.
