Mohamed Shei gets free pass for raping small children in Minnesota

118-180 days and no sex offender registry

In 2019, Mohamed Bakari Shei was charged with three first-degree felonies, as a juvenile, for raping two girls aged 4 and 9 in Rochester, MN. Shei was aged 15 and 16 at the time.

After years of delays, Shei was given a comically weak plea deal in which he was not even required to admit guilt. He entered an Alford plea in December of 2022. This means that he did not contest the facts but did not admit guilt.

On January 30th, 2023, District Judge Jacob Allen Monday sentenced Shei to 118-180 days in jail, one week of community service, and 30 years of probation. He will not be required to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors recommended zero time in the plea deal. Shei’s defense attorney complained that the 118-180 was too harsh and violated the plea deal.

The local District Attorney is Mark Ostrem, who was first elected in 2006.
