Ted Lawson, 63, was Secretary of the Ingham County Democratic Party. The media is also describing him as a “voter rights advocate.”
He was murdered while canvassing door to door on Sunday afternoon. A 15-year-old suspect has been arrested, but his identity was classified.
Lawson was canvassing on behalf of Lansing City Council candidate Trini Lopez Pehlivanoglu.
In 2021, Lansing experienced its highest homicide rate in modern city history. There were 25 homicides, for a rate of 22.1 per 100k.

The state of Michigan just published a new state crime report for 2022. Fewer than half, 48%, of murder and nonnegligent homicides were cleared. Fewer than a third, 29%, of non-fatal gunshot injuries were cleared.
While the state is only 14.1% Black, 72% of homicide victims and 77.1% of known homicide suspects were Black in 2022.
