A recall effort against San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin passed with 60%. The mayor will have ten days to appoint an interim District Attorney. Voters will elect a new District Attorney in San Francisco in November.
This is a major blow to the movement to elect “progressive prosecutors” in major US cities. This movement maintains that it is the job of prosecutors to reform the judicial system by reducing the number of people held in custody. This generally translates to criminals not being prosecuted at all.
At the forefront of this movement is multi-billionaire George Soros. He donated $600k to fund Boudin’s campaign.
78% of donors to the pro-recall effort live within the county. 51% of donors opposed to the anti-recall effort live outside of the county. The largest financial supporter of the effort to fight the recall was multi-billionaire Silicon Valley tycoon Chris Larsen.
San Francisco witnessed an explosion in crime that coincided with Boudin being elected.
There is a similar ongoing effort to recall Soros-funded progressive prosecutor Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón.
