Bui Van Phu, 55, was caught on video launching a surprise attack on Jesus Cortes, 52. Cortes was left unconscienced with a fractured skull. He required brain surgery and is now in a medically induced coma.
Phu was initially charged with attempted murder by the NYPD. However, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, led by Darcel Denise Clark, reduced the attempted murder charge to misdemeanor assault. He was immediately released from custody without bail.
Phu is a convicted sex offender and is currently on parole. He was convicted of first degree sexual assault in 1995 and released on parole in 2019. He is designated as a level 3 sex offender, the highest level.
After the attack, he walked up to a police officer and confessed. He stated, ““I hit someone and he’s in the hospital. I don’t know if he’s dead. The police are looking for me.”
