Greek Orthodox Holy Synod unanimously condemns gay marriage

Most Greek citizens identify as Greek Orthodox

The so-called “conservative” ruling party of Greece, New Democracy [ND], is poised to legalize homosexual marriage. 146 or their 158 elected MPs are planning to join with the far-left Radical Left/Progressive Alliance [Syriza] to legalize homosexual marriage. The vote is expected to take place on February 12th, 2024.

New Democracy has a disproportionately large number of seats because of a “jackpot” system that is designed to suppress smaller non-establishment political parties. Elections are proportional representation. However, the first-place party gets an extra 17% of parliament as a jackpot. This system was created by ND and the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Party [PASOK] to try to create an American-style two-party system where ND and PASOK would alternate ruling the country. However, PASOK collapsed in 2012 due to anger over the Greek austerity program.

On Tuesday, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church got together and voted unanimously to condemn this.

Many sources claim that around 90% of the population of Greece identifies as Greek Orthodox.

Hierarchy of the Holy Synod is distributing a document condemning homosexual marriage to all 300 members of parliament. The Holy Synod previously published a 1,500-word document on the matter last December.
