Washington & Lee University is partly named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee. However, the University has been purging itself of its Confederate heritage.
The gravestone for Robert E. Lee’s horse and a stone sign marking his post-war stable have both been removed.
A new gravestone was installed that only says “Traveller 1857-1871.”
The University has also remodeled Lee Chapel, where Robert E. Lee is buried. Plagues and artifacts related to Lee and the Civil War have been removed.
