Mass shootings are usually defined as four or more gunshot victims. We defined “deadliest” in terms of the most fatalities. This list consists of all the mass shootings with four or more gunshot victims and three or more fatalities.
Key Findings:
- Despite the media hype around “White Mass Shooters,” only a small minority of mass shooters are White.
- A large majority of all mass shooters are Black, even though Blacks only constitute about 14% of the US population.
- Of the 37 mass shootings, there were only two where the shooter exclusively targeted members of a different race. In both cases, Whites were the victims.
- Black mass shooters, on average, tend to cause fewer fatalities than other races, but still caused about 52% of all fatalities in shootings where the race of the perpetrator is known.
