San Francisco, CA: White male killed in completely unprovoked shooting.
Calvin Riley, a 20-year-old college baseball player, was fatally shot on August 6, 2016, while playing Pokémon Go at Aquatic Park near Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco. According to reports, Riley was walking with a friend near the end of the promenade when he was struck by a bullet in the torso. The attack appeared random, with no words exchanged, and Riley’s phone and wallet were left untouched, ruling out robbery as a motive. Paramedics attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
US Park police issued a sketch of a Black male suspect and a description of his car. Despite a reward growing to $110k, the killer was never arrested.
Columbus, OH: Attempted murder of White couple in suspected racially motivated mob attack.
On July 26, 2016, Gregory Wheeler, a 26-year-old Ohio State University graduate student, and Samantha Haub, also 26, were attacked while playing Pokémon Go in Linden Park, Columbus, Ohio. A juvenile Black male on a bicycle approached them, asking to borrow Haub’s phone to call his mother. When Haub handed over her phone, the teen fled with it. When Wheeler chased after him, a dozen Black juveniles surrounded Wheeler and Haub.
Wheeler and Haub were savagely beaten, then kicked and stomped while they were on the ground. As Wheeler attempted to flee, the group shouted for someone to “get the gun.” Wheeler was then shot three times.
David Michael Sparks, a 14-year-old Black male, admitted to the shooting. Prosecutors gave him a free pass, with only SEVEN-months in juvie for attempted murder.
Wheeler was seriously disabled and still using a mobility scooter a year later.
Greenville, SC : Attempted murder White male in suspected racially motivated attack.
A Pokémon Go player was attacked at the Peace Center plaza in Greenville, South Carolina, on Wednesday, July 27, 2016. The victim was an unnamed 29-year-old White male from Simpsonville playing the game on the steps at South Main and West Broad streets. As a large group of Black males and females walked by, an unidentified Black male man launched a completely unprovoked attack. The victim was knocked unconscious, sustaining serious injuries. The Greenville Police classified the incident as attempted murder due to the severity of the injuries and were still seeking the suspect.
Local media in Greenville censored the race of the victim and the attacker. It was only because of friends and relatives speaking out on social media.
