Paula Lev was recently hired as principal of the High School for Law and Public Service in New York City. This is a public High school with 476 students.
Lev is from Dominica and has a Jewish and African background. The student body is listed as 83% Hispanic and 14% Black. According to great schools, the graduation rate is only 55% and 43% of the student body is “chronically absent.” The school has a Great Schools rating of 1 out of 10.
After being hired, she gave excess notices to four White teachers that their jobs were being eliminated. According to a probe launched by the Department of Education, she asked other faculty to help her purge the school of White teachers. Another faculty member alleges that Lev told her she was “going to get rid of all these white teachers that aren’t doing anything for the kids of our community,”
Class valedictorian Angel Dilawar, 17, leads a student campaign to bring back the purged faculty members. She launched a petition that has been signed by hundreds of other students. She will be a senior this September.
Dilawar calls for an end to the “utter disorganization and insanity at our school.”
According to Great Schools, academic standards at the school are rock bottom. Dilawar says fights in the hallways are now commonplace.
