The Norwegian Refugee Council [NRC] has announced that they will be forced to suspend some operations if payments from USAID are not resumed. Despite the name, NRC is not an entity of the Norwegian government but an NGO.
While the NRC also receives funding from the governments of Norway, Germany, Sweden, and the EU, they have revealed that America is their largest source of money. In 2024, the NRC says it received $150 million worth of US tax-payer dollars, which constituted about 20% of its total funding.
The Norwegian Refugee Council operates a program called the Norwegian Capacity Operation [NORCAP], which runs a project called “Capacity Development for dignified reception and protection of the rights of migrants and asylum seekers in Greece.” According to the NRC website, this project provides reception and legal assistance to the migrants illegally entering the islands of Greece. The purpose of which is to keep them in Europe.
The NRC also boasts about operations to help “vulnerable people” in Central and South America.
