Gary Blair, a mentally ill White man in Chesterfield, S.C., was LARPing as a cop, armed only with pepper spray. His own family called the actual police on him.
He was given a $35,000 bond for what should have been misdemeanor-level impersonation and was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial.
The family was told he was being evaluated for mental-health issues in jail. He wrote letters saying he was being tortured for being a White person.
After five months in jail, he was found dead, surrounded by feces, in a cell with the water shut off and no bed.
The cause of death is “profound dehydration.” The coroner notes bruises consistent with sleeping on a hard floor for a prolonged time. The family says that in only five months he went from 300 pounds to 180.
The family’s lawyer says other inmates have provided witness statements that he was systematically denied food and water.
The entire story was hidden from the public for almost two months. The county coroner was even concealing details from the family until a local media affiliate stepped in and put pressure on him.
When Blair was found dead, jail administrator Troy Ellerbe, a Black man, was quietly fired. No other actions are known to have been taken.
The death of Gary Blair was classified as a homicide by the county coroner.
