Hamburg is a German state consisting of the seven boroughs of the city of Hamburg. Of German’s sixteen states, Hamburg is one of Germany’s most left-wing states and over one third of the entire population has an immigrant background. Hamburg has the largest population of Afghans in all of Europe. It has one of the largest populations of Turks in all of Europe.
For Jan-June 2023, stabbings were up 23.7% and shootings were up 30.9% versus the same time period in 2022.
The worst hit borough was Hamburg-Mitte, where a majority of the residents have an immigrant background. It is full of housing projects.
