Why are some neighborhoods so much deadlier?

In 2021, Philadelphia set a new record for the highest homicide rate in city history. The state of Pennsylvania set new records in both 2020 and 2021. Delaware set a new record in 2021.

The local ABC station in Philadelphia has created a list of the homicide rates for each of Philadelphia’s police districts. The results are shocking.

The safest is District 07 with a three year average homicide rate of 4.2 per 100k. The most dangerous is District 24 with a three year average of 81 per 100k! District 24 has an average rate that is 19.3 times that of District 07!

These are the populations and three year average homicide rates for the three safest and three deadliest districts.

District 07: 95K, 4.2 per 100k

District 08: 97k, 5.5 per 100k

District 09: 66k, 6.5 per 100k

District 25: 68k, 66.2 per 100k

District 22: 77k, 69.2 per 100k

District 24: 67k, 81.0 per 100k

Philadelphia Homicides:

2020: 499 (1584k, 31.5 per 100k) – tie with former record from 1990
2021: 561 (1585k, 35.4 per 100k) – highest rate in history
2022: 516 (1576k, 32.7 per 100k) – second highest rate

So far, there have been at least 79 homicides in 2023.

Pennsylvania Homicides:

2019: 703 (12,800k, 5.4 per 100k)
2020: 922 (12,780k, 7.2 per 100k)
2021: 1,029 (12,960k, 7.9 per 100k) – highest rate in history
2022: 989 (12,970k, 7.6 per 100k) – 2nd highest in history

Delaware Homicides:

2019: 52 (977k, 5.3 per 100k)
2020: 84 (987k, 8.5 per 100k)
2021: 107 (1,003k, 10.6k per 100k) – highest rate in history
