Birmingham does it again! 4th new homicide rate record in 5 years

Birmingham only exceeds in murder

The city of Birmingham has once again set a new all time record for their homicide rate in 2024. This is their fourth new record in five years!

1992: 141 (263k, 53.6 homicides per 100k) former all-time highest rate

2020: 122 (200k, 61.0 homicides per 100k) new record for highest rate
2021: 142 (198k, 71.7 per 100k) new record for highest rate
2022: 144 (197k, 73.1 per 100k) new record for highest rate
2023: 135 (196k, 68.9 per 100k)

2024: 151 (195k, 77.1 per 100k)

Note: Birmingham officials say there were 148 murders in 1933. Birmingham had about 261k people at this time, which would give it a rate of 56.7 per 100k. However, far more was included on the official list of murders back then. Much of what was counted as a “murder” in 1933 is now classified as a lesser crime, like negligent manslaughter. This is true all across the USA.

Birmingham habitually declines to submit their homicide data to the FBI each year. They submitted no data from 2010 to 2020. From 2021-2023, 95.4% of known homicide suspects were Black. The Birmingham police department did not bother to sub-classify suspects as Latino or Not Latino.

Birmingham:

Black: 67.1%
White: 24.2%
Latino: 4.9%
Mixed Race: 3.4%
Asian: 1.4%
