Austin Texas is currently experiencing its worst murder rate in history

A new all time record was already set in July

Austin had 46 homicides in 1995, setting a record. They did not break this record until 2020, even though the population of the city grew rapidly the entire time. In 2021, the city already broke the 2020 record in July.

1995: 46 homicides (the former all-time record), est. population 560k, 8.2 per 100k

2018: 35, estimated population 936k, 3.7 per 100k

2019: 38

2020: 48

During the first six months of 2021, Austin had 43 homicides, a 104% increase over the same time period in 2020. With a current estimated population of 962k, this puts them on track for a 2021 homicide rate of 8.9 per 100k.

In July of 2021, the city experienced another 8 homicides, for a total of 51. So far, between August 1 and August 11th, there were at least three more. This brings the total to at least 54 as of August 11th.
