Sweden had net emigration in 2023

Remigration is here

Sweden’s Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy, Maria Malmer Stenergard, has announced that 2023 saw the fewest “asylum seekers” of any year since 1997. She claims that it was the first year Sweden saw net emigration in fifty years.

Sweden had net emigration from three countries in particular: Iraq, Syria, and Somalia. This was enough for an overall net emigration, meaning more people left Sweden than came in during the year.

During the first thirty weeks of 2024, Sweden only received 5,600 new “asylum seekers.” This is another 27% lower than the same period in 2023. Sweden is expected to have net emigration in 2024 as well.
