Newsweek is alleging that Trump won a higher share of the Black vote than any Republican in 48 years. They claim Trump got 21% of the Black male vote and falsely cite NBC News as their source. NBC News does not claim this, they claim that Trump got only 13% of the Black vote and do not break it down by gender. The source of the 21% Black male claim is from Edison Research. However, they also put the Black female vote for Trump at a dismal 7%. Edison Research places Trump’s total Black vote at only 13%, with Black females voting in higher numbers.
A consortium of major media outlets, including NBC News, CBS News, ABC News, and CNN, published one unified exit poll for 2024. Their conclusion is also that Trump took 13% of the Black vote. This is only one point higher than the 12% published by CNN and NBC News in 2020. Fox News claims that 16% of Blacks voted for Trump, allegedly based on a far larger sample size. However, the poll was conducted over nine days, ending on election day. It is presented as an exit poll but is actually a pre-election opinion poll.
Claims that Trump substantially increased his share of the Black vote in 2024 over 2020 appear to be clickbait with no source or factual evidence. Or they are based on pre-election opinion polling and not a real exit poll.
National Conservative finds it more likely that Trump benefitted from low Black male turnout in both 2016 & 2024 than any increase in Black males voting for his party. Expressing support for Trump is an easy way for Blacks to get large numbers of White fans on social media. So this could have created an echo-chamber / confirmation-bias feedback loop that created a false illusion in many people’s minds that Blacks were switching to Trump in more significant numbers.
